Data Science Graduate

What to expect

Being a graduate in the Data Science team is an exciting opportunity if you are looking to pursue a career in Data Science.  Our two-year programme will allow you to develop your data science skills and understanding, working on key analytical projects that will support our organisation. You’ll have the opportunity to work collaboratively with other members of the team, and will also have experience of completing projects yourself with support from the team.

No two days are ever the same in the Data Science Team.  You’ll be working on projects for all areas of our organisation, using a variety of machine learning, statistical and other analytical techniques to tackle key business challenges.  By keeping close to new developments in a rapidly changing field, we continuously look to explore and utilise new technologies, applications and approaches in the solutions we provide to the business.  By working on projects across the entire organisation, you’ll also gain a broad understanding of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, and will meet lots of new colleagues along the way.

The Data Science team have delivered a number of important solutions to the organisation.  Some examples include:

  • A predictive model that helps our operational teams manage service reservoir bacteriological risk
  • A sentiment tool that helps us understand how our customers are feeling
  • Operational research models that look to simulate our wastewater treatment activities, so we can explore how we can optimise our processes and activities
  • Software applications / solutions that help our colleagues manage and maintain operational rotas and other important health and safety requirements

A typical Data Science project will involve liaising with stakeholders and communicating complex concepts, understanding business problems and identifying appropriate technical solutions and the associated benefits. Important skills for a Data Scientist include connecting to different data sources and manipulating different data types into useful formats, utilising machine learning or statistical methods to leverage insight from data and operationalising analytics into business tools or applications. There will also be opportunity to utilise cloud analytics services, where huge compute power can be leveraged to develop complex and capable machine learning and deep learning models.

 

What we need

In order to apply, you will need:

  • Minimum 2:1 Degree in Data Science / Mathematics / Computer Science or a related subject
  • Eligible to work and live permanently in the UK
  • Be available to start with us 7 September 2020

In addition to this, you’ll be passionate about working with data, will be hard-working with a good eye for detail, and will contribute positively to the Data Science Team, making a real difference by implementing high quality solutions that bring real benefit to the organisation, and to our customers.


Data Engineering Graduate

What to expect

Our Data Engineering Team play a pivotal role in supporting data and analytics across our entire organisation.  Being a graduate within our Data Engineering Team will allow you to develop your skills and understanding of key data engineering concepts, working closely alongside other data teams within the organisation, such as the Data Science Team, to develop data pipelines that can be utilised to carry out analysis and reporting.  You’ll have the opportunity to undertake projects collaboratively with other members of the team, and will also develop experience of completing projects yourself, with support from the team.

You’ll be working on projects that have been requested from all areas of the organisation, so you’ll also gain a broad understanding of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, and will meet lots of new colleagues along the way.  You’ll have opportunity to work with the latest extract-transform-load (ETL) technologies, particularly utilising new approaches in the cloud, will help discover new sources of data that can improve insight, and will contribute to a wider Data Team that is supportive and encouraging.

As a member of the Data Engineering Team, you will be supporting:

  • The management of data used for analytics, such as predictive modelling, and reporting. You’ll have opportunity to develop a strong knowledge of data management practices, including how data can be structured and stored effectively for analysis, and kept safe and secure
  • The design and implementation of key data pipelines that help us monitor data quality, build powerful models and provide insightful dashboards to colleagues
  • Collaborative projects, with other members of the Data Team, providing valuable data engineering input for solutions that allow our colleagues to make key data-led decisions

A typical Data Engineering project will involve firstly liaising with stakeholders, defining how business requirements can be translated into data requirements.  Then acquiring, transforming and presenting data so it can be used for analysis and reporting.  Through developing an understanding of the wider Data Team, you will be provided with an appreciation of how data is best structured and presented to support analytical work.

  • Eligible to work and live permanently in the UK

Process Science/Engineering Graduate

What to expect

Being a graduate Process Scientist/Engineer is an exciting opportunity if you are looking to pursue a career in Water Industry.  During the two year graduate programme you will be based with the Operational Scientific teams, in either water or wastewater, and while you’ll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we’ll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and develop your skills and understanding alongside our Process Scientists.

The work with the Operational teams will provide you with a solid foundation of the Process Science work activities.  You’ll be working on all types and sizes of Water or Wastewater Assets that are employed across our operational area, you’ll also gain a broad understanding of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, and will meet lots of new colleagues along the way.

Following the two year graduate programme, you will be part of the Welsh Water Capital Delivery team and have the opportunity to undertake large investment projects collaboratively with other members of the team and best in class Construction Partners. You will also have experience of overseeing Water and Wastewater improvement projects yourself, through feasibility, design construction and commissioning with support from the wider Capital Delivery Team.

The Capital Delivery Team have delivered a number of important projects recent years.  Some examples include:

  • Rainscape schemes in West Wales (£40m)
  • North Wales Sludge Strategy (£58m)
  • Bryncowlyd water treatment works (£35m)

A typical capital delivery project will involve liaising with operational stakeholders, communicating delivery strategies and identifying appropriate technical solutions. Important skills for a Process Scientist will include problem solving, analysing process data and assist with the development and implementation of capital schemes.

 

What we need

In order to apply, you will need:

  • Minimum 2:1 degree in Chemical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or alternative scientific discipline
  • Membership of a relevant Professional body and willing to work towards Chartership
  • Eligible to work and live permanently in the UK
  • Be available to start with us 7 September 2020

In addition to this, you’ll be passionate about water or wastewater treatment, will be hard-working with a good attitude towards problem solving, and will contribute positively to the Capital Delivery Team, making a real difference by nurturing our treatment processes that bring benefit to the organisation, and to our customers.
